USD’s 75th Anniversary: Looking Ahead to a Bright Future

Share

Changemakers disrupt – carving new paths, sharing new ways of thinking and lighting the way forward. In 2024, the USD’s 75th Anniversary is Celebrated. The yearlong celebration has been a reflection of the enduring mission, values and vision sought by founders Mother Rosalie Hill, RSCJ, and Bishop Charles Francis Buddy.

Just as foundational elements help educate, enrich and prepare students for productive lives, USD motivates students to maximize their knowledge and enhance their growth, while shaping the Changemakers they are destined to become.

For 75 years, student success has been seen through a Changemaker lens that inspires students to confront humanity’s urgent challenges by fostering peace, working for justice and leading with love. At USD, this means serving in ways that lead each person to live a meaningful life and to encourage those around them to do the same. They embrace innovation and take a holistic approach to solving problems. As Changemakers, they have a positive influence on others on campus and in the community, and make connections locally and globally.

These ideas embody what is possible with a USD education and what inspires Toreros past, present and future.

“The future of American higher education is meeting the needs of diverse populations – and that is really at the heart and core of a Catholic institution,” USD President James T. Harris, III, DEd. Shared with GB Magazine. “We have exciting things ahead, including official designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, which is expected to take place next year. We have also increased the number of Pell Grant recipients, increased the percentage of students who are in the military or military-connected and increased the number of adults who are coming back to school. At USD, I believe we have the perfect learning environment that supports access for all.”
