Honoring Our Heroes
As the 23rd anniversary of September 11, 2001, approaches, our nation pauses to remember the incredible bravery and sacrifice of our first responders. On that tragic day, 441 first responders lost their lives while heroically rushing toward danger to aid those in need. Their heroism left an indelible mark on our society, and in their memory, communities across the country continue to show appreciation for those who serve today.
In Chula Vista, Seven Mile Casino has been at the forefront of honoring these modern-day heroes. For years, they have commemorated the 9/11 anniversary by providing lunch to the city’s first responders, a small but heartfelt gesture to thank the men and women who dedicate their lives to our community’s safety.
Last year, in partnership with the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce, Seven Mile Casino expanded this tradition, inviting other local businesses to join in expressing thanks. The response was overwhelming. Together, they adopted all 12 fire stations in Chula Vista, Bonita, and Imperial Beach, as well as the Chula Vista Police headquarters, delivering appreciation breakfasts and lunches to first responders across the city.
Participating businesses included The South Bay Family YMCA, California Coast Credit Union Otay Branch, NEXTAFF, The B Factor, Herb & Joy Chula Vista, Novo Brazil, Prescott and Lowther, Lighthouse Cares Foundation, AT&T, Wyyerd Fiber, Funeraria del Angel, Fastest Labs, Torrey Pines Bank, Realtor Sharmane Estolano, El Pollo Grill, California Taco Shop, Bonita Farmer’s Market, and Hans and Harry’s Bakery. These organizations provided meals and, when possible, joined first responders for their meals, showing solidarity and gratitude.
Building on the success of last year’s event, the 2024 commemoration will expand even further to include dinner. This additional meal ensures that more first responders – especially those on late shifts – receive the recognition they deserve.
This expansion reflects the growing commitment of the Chula Vista business community to honor those who protect us. It is a testament to the power of unity and the importance of remembering the sacrifices that first responders make every day.
As we approach the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, the efforts in Chula Vista serve as a reminder that while the tragedy of that day is in the past, the bravery and dedication of our first responders continue to inspire us. By coming together to provide these meals, the community is not only remembering the heroes of 9/11 but also celebrating the everyday heroes among us.
