Building a Brighter Future for San Diego’s Epilepsy Community
Wendy Urushima-Conn, the President and CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County, is not your average leader. Her approach is rooted in empathy and a deep-seated belief in the power of human connection. She calls it servant leadership, a philosophy that places the needs of others at the forefront. This approach has proven to be a cornerstone in the Epilepsy Foundation’s mission to support those living with epilepsy across San Diego.
“If folks are empowered to serve and make decisions, they are better at serving our amazing, resilient community,” Wendy explains. Her leadership style encourages everyone to work together and think creatively, so the team can quickly adapt to what their clients need.
Wendy’s life took an unexpected turn when her daughter, Reiko, was diagnosed with epilepsy. Experiencing firsthand the shock, fear, and confusion of a new epilepsy diagnosis profoundly shaped her perspective. It was in those challenging moments that a deep-rooted passion ignited within her – a desire to create a supportive community for others navigating this same difficult journey. “Receiving an epilepsy diagnosis can feel so overwhelming and scary,” added Wendy. “Showing up for people, even if it is being a quiet listener in the early stages can be so powerful.”
The Epilepsy Foundation has made a remarkable difference in the lives of San Diegans. Their comprehensive suite of programs offers a lifeline to individuals and families impacted by epilepsy. From providing essential support and education to fostering a sense of community, the Epilepsy Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those they serve. Support groups offer a safe space for people to connect, share experiences, and find encouragement. Counseling services provide invaluable emotional support and practical coping strategies. And through educational programs, the Epilepsy Foundation empowers individuals to better understand and manage their epilepsy.
“It is especially heartwarming to hear from a parent when we have supported their child in a school setting, provided first aid training for their school or for a local business who wants to understand how to best support an employee with epilepsy,” Wendy shares. These stories highlight the Epilepsy Foundation’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and understanding community.
To celebrate its 70th anniversary, the Epilepsy Foundation is hosting a 70s-themed Gingerbread City Gala on December 11. This festive event is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the Foundation’s vital programs. For those who prefer a more active approach, the annual Sharon’s Ride.Run.Walk. offers a chance to support the cause while enjoying the beautiful scenery of Mission Bay.
The Epilepsy Foundation is always seeking volunteers to support their events and programs. Whether you have a few hours to spare or want to make a more significant commitment, there are opportunities for everyone.
Wendy’s leadership, combined with the dedication of the Epilepsy Foundation’s team, has created a powerful force for positive change in San Diego. Through empathy, support, and education, they are building a brighter future for those living with epilepsy.
