Today, yesterday, tomorrow, and every day after, the men and women of the U.S. Navy are protecting our country and our freedoms. What we might not see is the unwavering dedication behind every sortie, flight, mission and deployment.

At the center of America’s Naval power are its 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Each of these carriers is part of a naval strike group that includes up to 90 aircraft onboard, guided missile cruisers, guided missile destroyers, attack submarines and supply and logistics vessels.

One of the eleven carriers is the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). Measuring 1,100 feet in length, weighing over 100,000 tons, and home to 5,400 sailors, this vessel carries up to 90 jets and helicopters and 3,000,000 gallons of jet fuel. Its scale is staggering – twice the size of carriers you might see in museums. Even more impressive, the U.S. has 11 nuclear-powered carriers strategically positioned around the globe, ready to defend, protect, or project power on a moment’s notice.

A Firsthand Look Inside USS Abraham Lincoln

We were invited to the Navy’s Distinguished Visitor program, recommended by the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Our journey began with a CH-53 helicopter flight to the ship, landing on the flight deck 100 miles off the coast. From the moment we stepped on board, it was clear: this was not a pleasure cruise – we were visiting an active warship in training.

The flight deck was a hive of activity, with F18s, F35 stealth jets, radar planes, and helicopters all ready for action. Every crew member has the same mission: get the planes in the air, and they can launch one every 30 seconds, 24/7 if necessary. Watching jets take off at full afterburner, just a few feet away, is a bone-rattling 140-decibel experience unlike anything in civilian life. Night landings on rough seas are even more intense.

Whether working in the kitchen, flight deck, hospital, or engine room, every crew member is laser-focused, performing with dedication, honor, and skill. The average age onboard is 20, and with rigorous training and daily physical activity, the crew is exceptionally fit.

We were struck by the warmth and professionalism of everyone – from Rear Admiral Kevin Lenox, Commanding Officer Captain Pete Riebe, Big XO Captain Damon Loveless, Command Master Chief Robert Stumm, to the sailors who guided us through the miles of passageways, stairwells, and “knee knockers.”

The Distinguished Visitor experience left us with a deep respect for the men and women aboard USS Abraham Lincoln and all members of the U.S. military.

What does CVN-72 mean?

CVN is the hull classification symbol for the Navy that designates Carrier (C), Aviation (V), and Nuclear (N). The 72 refers specifically to the USS Abraham Lincoln, indicating a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

How powerful is the USS Abraham Lincoln?

The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN‑72) is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, meaning it has two nuclear reactors that generate tremendous power—enough to propel the 100,000-ton ship at high speeds while also supplying electricity for its operations, aircraft, and weapons systems. Its nuclear power makes it effectively self-sufficient in propulsion for decades without relying on conventional fuel.

How many people are on the USS Abraham Lincoln?

The carrier typically carries about 3,200 Navy sailors who operate the ship and its systems, plus around 2,480 personnel in the air wing, including pilots, maintenance crews, and support staff. This brings the total complement to roughly 5,680 people, though numbers can vary depending on the mission.

Can the USS Abraham Lincoln operate for 20 years?

Yes, nuclear carriers like the USS Abraham Lincoln are designed for a service life of 50 years, including scheduled maintenance and nuclear refueling overhauls. The ship’s reactors are usually refueled once, roughly 20–25 years into its service, allowing the carrier to operate continuously at sea without frequent stops for fuel.

What does the 72 mean on the aircraft carrier?

The number 72 is the hull number of the USS Abraham Lincoln. In U.S. Navy nomenclature, aircraft carriers are given “CVN” designations (N for nuclear-powered) followed by a sequential number. Abraham Lincoln is the 72nd carrier in the sequence of U.S. aircraft carriers.

How long can USS Abraham Lincoln go without refueling?

Thanks to its nuclear reactors, the USS Abraham Lincoln can operate for over 20 years without refueling its propulsion system. The ship can still be resupplied with food, fuel for aircraft, and other consumables as needed, but the ship itself doesn’t require conventional fuel.

How fast is Abraham Lincoln?

The USS Abraham Lincoln can reach speeds over 30 knots (about 35 mph or 56 km/h), making it one of the fastest vessels of its size in the world. Its speed allows rapid deployment across oceans and quick maneuvering in operational theaters. The exact speed is not disclosed due to operational security.

What type of aircraft does the USS Abraham Lincoln carry?

The carrier’s air wing typically includes F/A‑18E/F Super Hornets, E‑2D Hawkeyes for airborne early warning, EA‑18G Growlers for electronic warfare, MH‑60R/S helicopters, and sometimes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance and strike missions.

How long is the USS Abraham Lincoln?

The ship is about 1,092 feet (333 meters) long—roughly the length of three football fields—providing ample space for aircraft, crew, and operations.

Where is the USS Abraham Lincoln based?

The USS Abraham Lincoln is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, but it can be deployed worldwide to support U.S. naval operations.

How much does the USS Abraham Lincoln weigh?

The fully loaded displacement of the carrier is about 100,000 tons, including fuel, aircraft, equipment, and crew.

What weapons does the USS Abraham Lincoln have?

In addition to its aircraft, the carrier is equipped with defensive weapons such as RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles, Phalanx CIWS (Close-In Weapon Systems), and NATO-standard missiles to defend against air and missile threats.

How does the USS Abraham Lincoln launch aircraft?

Aircraft are launched using steam or electromagnetic catapults (EMALS on newer carriers). Planes accelerate from 0 to takeoff speed in just a few seconds along the flight deck

Can the USS Abraham Lincoln operate in all weather conditions?

Yes, the carrier is built to operate in rough seas, extreme temperatures, and storm conditions. Its design allows it to maintain flight operations and mission readiness even in challenging environments.

How long does it take to build an aircraft carrier like the Abraham Lincoln?

Construction typically takes 5–7 years, with extensive planning, engineering, and installation of complex systems before commissioning. The Abraham Lincoln was commissioned in 1989 after years of construction and trials.

Does the USS Abraham Lincoln have a hospital onboard?

Yes, the carrier has a fully functional medical facility, including surgical suites, dental care, and emergency services, capable of treating both routine and combat injuries for thousands of personnel.

How many decks does the USS Abraham Lincoln have?

The ship has multiple decks, including the flight deck, hangar deck for aircraft storage and maintenance, and several decks for crew accommodations, command operations, and engineering spaces.
