“Don’t borrow trouble.”
– Pat Kilkenny

The Lucky Duck Foundation’s mission is to prevent and alleviate the suffering of homelessness throughout San Diego County. The Lucky Duck Foundation believes if we collaborate and coordinate local efforts, call on elected leaders to take action, follow the facts, and apply sound business principles, we can meaningfully address and make a difference in the lives of thousands of San Diegans experiencing homelessness. Dick Hoye is a Lucky Duck Foundation Volunteer & band leader.

#1 I grew up in Salem, Oregon and later, Orange, California.

#2 I was adopted at birth, and so was my wife.

#3 Favorite Travel Destinations: Southeast Alaska; Southwest Washington; Cabo, Baja California Sur; Kauai, Hawaii.

#4 Places I would still like to visit: Portugal and Ireland.

#5 Best way to decompress: Workouts like paddling, surfing & cycling (I would like to do a century ride).

#6 We have a yellow lab (Luna Lu – age 4) and a cattle dog (Sunny – age 2).

#7 I have been blessed beyond belief – great parents, educational opportunities, good health, work environments abounding in opportunities for growth and success, wonderful family…. To say not everyone has been so lucky would be a dramatic understatement. So, for me, extending a hand to those in need is more than an imperative, it is a privilege. If I were someone in need, I would greatly appreciate a ‘hand up’ and I would like to think I would make the most of it.

#8 My lifelong good friend – Pat Kilkenny – asked me if I would consider getting involved with the then nascent Lucky Duck Foundation. The first ‘Soiree’ was held at a Mexican restaurant in North San Diego County. I think we had 40-50 people in attendance. The very next year we had to find a larger venue due to the interest and burgeoning headcount. The beneficiaries were different back then but supporting Father Joe’s Village was a priority from day one.

#9 I was so moved by Father Joe’s personal journey as the “Hustler Priest” and the incredible work he was doing to feed, house, and clothe the homeless of San Diego, I knew anything I could contribute would be consistent with the spirit of the Golden Rule and make a real difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.

#10 Funds raised at “The Showcase Soiree” will support a multitude of efforts, including but not limited to: employment and job training opportunities; “cash for trash”; youth and seniors; new shelters; winter coats that transform into sleeping bags; food & water outreach; strategic collaborations; and much more.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
