A Symphony of Healing and Hope

Resounding Joy is a San Diego-based nonprofit organization committed to bringing music therapy services to underserved populations. Initially targeting socially isolated seniors, the organization has since broadened its reach to include a diverse array of groups such as premature infants, children with physical or intellectual challenges, military personnel, veterans, seniors, and those in end-of-life care.

Executive Director and CEO Kerri Fox emphasizes the impact of music therapy, stating, “Music therapy has the extraordinary ability to change lives. Through personalized, compassionate care, we help individuals overcome challenges, discover their strengths, and find new pathways to wellness. Music truly is a universal language of healing.”

Resounding Joy’s board-certified music therapists utilize evidence-based musical interventions to address various social, cognitive, emotional, motor, physiological, and mental health goals. These include activities such as active music making, learning instruments, listening to music, songwriting, lyric analysis, dancing, movement, therapeutic singing, guided relaxation, and breathing exercises. The therapists are specially trained in trauma-informed care, ensuring a sensitive and supportive approach to all sessions.

Partnerships with local organizations, schools, healthcare facilities, hospice organizations, and community groups are central to Resounding Joy’s mission. These collaborations allow the delivery of services at various locations, in clients’ homes, or virtually, thus overcoming barriers related to geography, race, ethnicity, economic status, or disability. Individual and group music therapy services are often offered for free or on a sliding scale to ensure financial accessibility. Through rigorous evaluation, data collection, and feedback, Resounding Joy continually refines its services to better meet the needs of its diverse audiences.

Resounding Joy delivers music therapy and engagement through four key programs: Sounds of Healing for infants, children, and youth; Sounds of Legacy for older adults; Sounds of Community for recreational music and wellness; and Sounds of Service for military personnel, veterans, and first responders.

Resounding Joy is hosting its 6th Annual Living Your Dreams Fundraising Concert on October 5, 2024 at a private residence in Scripps Ranch. The event will feature the Sounds of Service band, a group of veterans who have benefited from music therapy and will perform popular cover songs as well as original compositions. All proceeds will support music therapy sessions for veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, and military-connected families.

Music therapist and band liaison Tia Mae Frostrom shared with GB Magazine, “It is amazing to witness how far our band members have come through music therapy. From their personal journeys to performing on stage, their stories are inspiring, and their talent continues to grow together. This event is not just a concert but a testament to the transformative power of music.”

Over the past two decades, Resounding Joy has impacted nearly 200,000 individuals throughout the San Diego community. The organization’s work vividly illustrates the profound benefits that music and music engagement can offer for physical, emotional, and social well-being. Through its comprehensive and compassionate approach, Resounding Joy continues to harmonize lives and build a more connected and healing world.
