IGNITE Academy

The San Diego Automotive Museum (SDAM) is proud to present the IGNITE Academy, an innovative educational program that aims to Inspire, Guide, Network, provide Internships, Train, and Educate students in the automotive industry. This Academy offers skill development, industry-relevant training, mentorship, financial literacy, and automotive networking. IGNITE’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty by empowering young individuals to pursue careers in the automotive sector, ultimately contributing positively to their families, communities, and society.

The Academy’s mission to empower youth for a successful adulthood is rooted in exposing them to a wide range of career options, a method proven to enhance academic performance. Through IGNITE Academy, young participants are encouraged to explore their interests and creativity through artistic painting, upholstery design, engine troubleshooting, appraisals, or custom wheel designs. By engaging with automotive professionals and diving into these areas of interest, students discover how to transform their talents into rewarding careers. This exposure inspires and empowers them, and fosters improved mental health and smoother transitions into adulthood.

IGNITE tailors its educational experiences to meet the evolving needs of the automotive industry, ensuring students gain in-demand skills and knowledge that make them career-ready. They also connect students with internships and job opportunities through a network of vetted partners.

Youth are immersed in automotive trades through monthly hands-on workshops facilitated by the Museum and career exploration sessions with Academy partners. These experiences help them uncover their passions and envision a successful future. For the 2024-25 school year, at least one workshop will be offered each month, focusing on engine work, tires, or upholstery. In addition, a career exploration class covering subjects such as financial literacy, will be provided monthly to further support student development. Youth will also participate in workshops focused on building cover letters and resumes, gaining valuable insights into employer expectations for job applications.

Expanding on this groundwork, IGNITE Academy’s active educational experiences are designed to empower under-resourced high school students with the skills, assets, and opportunities to rise out of poverty and achieve long-term economic stability. The Academy nurtures personal confidence, lifelong learning, and professional development while connecting students with community businesses. Through these partnerships, students gain access to advanced certifications, specialized courses, and even opportunities to step into managerial roles, further equipping them for a successful future.

The Museum recently achieved a significant milestone by securing a dedicated building for the Academy’s endeavors and are thrilled to announce the upcoming move to the IGNITE Academy – Santee Campus this month!

The Santee Campus is revolutionary for the Academy. It will feature automotive bays to enhance hands-on learning experiences for students and a break room where they can study and meet with their mentors. Additionally, the campus will offer transportation services.

Be a catalyst for change – help young people achieve their dreams! Volunteer as a mentor, chaperone a career exploration, or donate to support IGNITE Academy youth. Together, we can make a lasting impact. To get involved, contact Eddie Vega, the Museum’s Education Department Head, at (619) 398-0317. Your support makes all the difference!
