Sharp HealthCare’s Innovation Initiative: Pioneering Healthcare Transformation

Share

Leading Through Innovation

In April 2024, Sharp HealthCare celebrated the first anniversary of the Sharp Prebys Innovation and Education Center (SPIEC). This extraordinary new facility serves as a hub for not only Sharp, but also the broader San Diego community. More than 100 events, training programs, conferences and seminars have been held at the center to date. Sharp welcomes community organizations to consider the SPIEC for hosting meetings and conferences.

The opening of the SPIEC also marked the launch of Sharp’s Innovation Initiative, heralding San Diego’s largest health care provider as a leading nonacademic health system paving the way for the transformation of care.

Within the SPIEC, the James S. Cox Technology Immersion Lab serves as the hub of innovation and idea development. Here, researchers, clinicians and technologists partner to explore advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, software development, machine learning, advanced analytics and more – all with the aim of improving health care delivery and enhancing patient outcomes. The lab was designed to showcase state-of-the art technology to expand The Sharp Experience.

Sharp Ventures

Another major milestone of Sharp’s Innovation Initiative was the launch of a formal innovation program, Sharp Ventures. The goal of Sharp Ventures is to advance health care innovation through the incubation and commercialization of new ideas with leading industry partners.
The challenges of health care are complex, so identifying the right partners and cultivating a culture of innovation are critical. With Sharp Ventures, innovators from around the country can work side by side with key leaders at Sharp in the development, testing and deployment of fresh ideas.

The Sharp Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (A3) Institute

The health care industry continues to experience rapid transformation, and no change is more imminent than the potential for artificial intelligence (AI). In response, Sharp Ventures is launching the Sharp A3 Institute to further explore how AI can improve care. Through the institute, Sharp will:
• Deploy best-in-class technology at scale to maximize the impact of AI in clinical and administrative settings.
• Serve as a regional hub to better understand the impact of AI on health care from the perspectives of patients, providers and the community.
• Transform health care delivery through the creation of commercial products and services to serve San Diego and beyond.
The institute will invest directly with early-stage companies that align with Sharp’s core strengths, notably in data analytics and digital health, and aims to establish an endowed innovation fund for opportunities focused on balancing the potential of AI and the delivery of health care.

Foundation, private and venture philanthropy will play a key role in helping bring the institute to life. The ENVISION campaign will support the growth, development and operation of the institute, the Sharp A3 early-stage investment program, software development, research, and the creation and growth of an endowed innovation fund.
