Share

Marilyn Barrett, aged 89, passed away on September 24th in Naples, Florida after a courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded by her loving family, Marilyn showed immense strength throughout her journey. Prior to her diagnosis in May 2023, she had lived a rich, vibrant life in her beloved La Jolla, California.

Born in Chicago in 1934, Marilyn dedicated herself to her children’s upbringing in the San Francisco Bay Area, actively participating in the school system and volunteering her creative talents in the community.

One of Marilyn’s great passions was interior design. She had a natural talent for creating beautiful spaces and her homes were a testament to her artistic eye. Marilyn showcased her own paintings, hand-built furnishings, and impressive renovations.

In the 1970s, she attended Heald Business College and went on to establish her own business “The Marilyn Barrett Placement Agency” in San Mateo, California. Her agency played a pivotal role in matching thousands of administrative workers with job opportunities during the Silicon Valley boom.

Marilyn was a member and Vice President of The American Business Women’s Association during her working years. Her passion for leadership, networking, advancing women in business and hard work earned her a “Top 10 Business Woman in the Country” award at that time.

In 1990, she retired to La Jolla, where she built a robust social life playing bridge, hosting and attending hundreds of social events and parties for over 32 years. Marilyn was highly visible and an extremely passionate member of the social scene in La Jolla and San Diego. She was hard to miss with her colorful fashion sense. She was deeply connected to her many good friends. She treasured the Country Club luncheons and theme parties. Marilyn loved decorating her home for parties and holidays. She made every event fun and made everyone feel special.

Marilyn leaves a legacy of love and vibrancy. She is survived by her children, her stepdaughters, her 4 grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren. She will be missed, and her memory will be forever a source of inspiration.
