10 Things About Pat Chagnon & Father Joe’s Villages

“Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created.” – Esther 4:14

The mission of Father Joe’s Villages is to prevent and end homelessness, one life at a time. Father Joe’s Villages helps our neighbors end the cycle of homelessness through four pillars of care: Meeting Basic Needs, Investing in Children, Making Health a Priority, and Strengthening Self-Sufficiency. During November and December, Father Joe’s Villages is hosting their “1st Annual Holiday Village at the Bayfront”, in partnership with Hilton San Diego Bayfront, to raise crucial funds and awareness for the tens of thousands of unhoused neighbors in San Diego. Pat Chagnon is a Volunteer, Board member, and the Holiday Village Event Chair for Father Joe’s Villages.

#1 I was born in Columbia, South Carolina and moved to San Diego when I was 9 years old.

#2 Spain and Portugal are my favorite travel destinations. I would love to travel in Africa.

#3 I love to quilt and create to help myself decompress.

#4 We have a Labrador Retriever named Hollis.

#5 Favorite movie: “The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig because you realize how one decision in life from day to day has a ripple effect.

#6 I got involved with Father Joe’s Villages through the challenges that my sister and family faced due to my sister’s drug use. Father Joe’s Villages, which used to be called St. Vincent de Paul, was there for my sister and helped her in her time of need.

#7 There have been so many people who have touched and blessed my life – I am always amazed by the goodness that surrounds us.

#8 I feel it is everyone’s responsibility to lift one another up, to encourage each other and support one another to our highest actuality.

#9 At Father Joe’s Villages, we restore dignity by combining evidence-based housing models with the services and support people need to get off the streets for good. 100% of our preschool children improved early literacy skills. And, 96% of neighbors in our employment program gained the skills needed for employment. Together, we can change people’s lives.

#10 The Holiday Village event will raise funds to support Father Joe’s Villages holistic services including hot meals in the holiday season, life-saving medical care, empowering employment and education services, and caring case management to ensure our clients can successfully transition to and thrive in permanent housing. Community members can participate by sponsoring a tree, visiting the tree display at the Hilton Bayfront, and bidding on a tree to take home for the holidays.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
