“Do not let what you can not do interfere with what you can do.”

Juli Stone Moran

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) “Go Red For Women” encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, and also inspires action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. “Go Red For Women” challenges women to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. “Go Red For Women” also gives women the tools they need to lead a heart healthy life. Juli Stone Moran is on the “Go Red for Women” San Diego Executive Leadership Team as well as the Board Chair for the San Diego Division.

#1 I grew up in Tempe, Arizona – my dad was an exercise science and wellness professor at ASU.

#2 Australia/New Zealand are at the top of my list for places to travel.

#3 Bhutan is known for promoting gross national happiness over GDP. I loved learning about the culture while also experiencing incredible hiking and biking there.

#4 We need balance, not just for ourselves, but for those around us and to find a sense of purpose in our local communities.

#5 I have two horses – they are both a passion and a hobby – I compete in a western discipline called “reining” and am a World Champion.

#6 My horse trainer is roughly 25 years younger than me. When I think of her, the Abraham Lincoln quote comes to mind “I had a friend that believed in me and I was too afraid to let them down.” She puts me in positions to do things I never thought I could do, such as entering me in competitions that I would not have pursued due to doubt about my capabilities.

#7 As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women may experience other symptoms that are typically less associated with heart attack, such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain

#8 Heart disease is the number one killer of women. Cardiovascular disease causes 1 in 3 deaths among women each year.

#9 Use the letters in F.A.S.T. to spot a Stroke:

F = Face Drooping; A = Arm Weakness; S = speech Difficulty; T = Time to call 911.

#10 “Go Red For Women” is focused on both prevention and earlier, more accurate diagnosis for women. Know the signs of cardiovascular disease and stroke and make strides to improve your health by focusing on exercise, stress management, sleep and diet.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
