Southwest Airlines Soarin’ at the Shell

On a sun-drenched afternoon along the San Diego Bay, with the water shimmering behind the stage, Southwest Airlines and the San Diego Symphony announced a new partnership, naming Southwest the Official Airline of the Symphony. This partnership is designed to celebrate the city, support the arts, and create memorable moments for residents and visitors alike.

“San Diego has been part of Southwest Airlines’ story for more than 40 years, and we are proud to build lasting relationships in this extraordinary community,” said Laura Nieto, Managing Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships at Southwest Airlines. “Connecting people to what matters most is at the heart of everything we do, and there is no better stage for that than the Rady Shell.”

Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is a cornerstone of the city’s cultural fabric, with more than 80 full-time musicians and a season spanning classical, pops, family programming, and spectacular special events.

Casey Patterson, Director of Corporate Partnerships for the Symphony, shared, “Southwest’s commitment to San Diego and dedication to customer service make them the ideal partner to welcome guests from near and far to our world-class venues.”

The heartbeat of that community mission is Music Connects, the Symphony’s flagship engagement program, and one that Southwest is proud to champion as its Presenting Sponsor. Music Connects provides over 10,000 free concert tickets each season and brings live performances directly into community settings across the region, making music more accessible to all.

The season got off to a galactic start on May 1, when Southwest activated at Star Wars Night, an evening of interactive games, themed giveaways, and a photo op on the pre-concert lawn that brought out the kid in everyone.

There is plenty more ahead. On July 4, the Shell becomes the backdrop for America the Beautiful 250, a fitting celebration of the nation’s milestone birthday. Two Harry Potter Nights light up August with wands and wizarding games for attendees young and old. Brandi Carlile takes the stage in September. And Southwest closes the year as Presenting Sponsor of all Holiday Programming in December because great music, like great hospitality, knows no off-season.

Southwest’s Heart is for San Diego. And with the San Diego Symphony, that connection is taking center stage.
