For more than 55 years, Chicano Federation has been dedicated to strengthening communities and expanding opportunities throughout San Diego County. Each year, Chicano Federation serves more than 50,000 individuals through programs that support children, youth, families, seniors, immigrants, and future leaders. Chicano Federation cultivates opportunities and advocates for families and individuals to create a more equitable community. Through education, housing, health and wellness, workforce development, leadership development, and advocacy, Chicano Federation works to ensure that all people have the opportunity to thrive. Liz Ramírez is the Chief Executive Officer of Chicano Federation.
#1 I grew up on both sides of the border in Mexicali, Baja California, and El Centro in California’s Imperial Valley. I moved to San Diego when I was 18, and those cross-border experiences shaped who I am today.
#2 My parents have had the greatest impact on my life through their sacrifices, resilience, and unconditional love. They taught me the value of hard work, humility, and service to others.
#3 Mexico will always be one of my favorite destinations because of its culture, history, food, and people. Every visit feels like a connection to my roots.
#4 There are so many places I would still love to visit because I believe travel helps us grow and connect with people from different backgrounds. India is especially high on my list because of its rich spiritual traditions and history.
#5 I enjoy practicing pilates, yoga, meditation, reading, dancing, volunteering and traveling. These activities help me stay grounded, curious, and connected to myself and others.
#6 I have a wild little cat named Atziri. She keeps our home full of love and personality.
#7 Two books that have greatly influenced me are “All About Love” by Bell Hooks and “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Paulo Freire. Both offer powerful lessons about love, liberation, and social change.
#8 I believe none of us succeeds alone, and I am grateful for the people who invested in me along the way. Giving back is how I honor those who came before me while helping create opportunities for future generations.
#9 I joined Chicano Federation because I believe deeply in its mission of creating opportunities and advancing equity for our communities. As someone whose life has been shaped by education, mentorship, and community support, this work feels both personal and purposeful.
#10 On October 2, Chicano Federation will host Celebrando Raíces, our annual fundraising event celebrating 57 years of service to the San Diego community honoring our Latine roots and heritage through culture, music, food, and comunidad. The funds raised will support the Federation’s programs and services, helping families navigate challenging times, access critical resources, and build brighter futures for generations to come.
