10 Things About Louise Brandy & American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women

Share

“Wherever you point your mind, your body will follow!”

The American Heart Association’s signature initiative, Go Red for Women, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally. While the majority of cardiac events can be prevented, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming the lives of 1 in 3 women. For more than two decades, Go Red for Women has encouraged awareness. It challenges women to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. Louise Brandy will be Chairing the 2025 Go Red for Women San Diego.

#6 My faithful companion is Coda, a 14-year-old Siberian Husky.

#7 Bucket List: Dog Sledding ride in Oregon, Lunch with Keanu Reeves.

#8 The power of people coming together to create awareness and support funding research for cardiovascular health for women is the only way we will decrease the mortality of women and drastically reduce this leading cause of death.

#9 I have been involved with the American Heart Association since 2005. My late husband, Mycle, and I joined their “Train To End Stroke” program and completed a full marathon together while raising funds. Mycle walked across America to help inspire stroke survivors to continue with their recovery exercises. In 2023, I chaired the San Diego Heart and Stroke Walk and it was exhilarating to see how this team does everything they can every day to help this community to benefit from the great work of the AHA. They are relentless in creating awareness and providing equitable health in this entire market.

#10 Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the No. 1 killer of women, yet women remain underdiagnosed and undertreated. Women also experience unique life stages, like pregnancy and menopause, that increase their risk of heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement is committed to ensuring women are no longer disproportionately affected by CVD. We need to save more women’s lives, and this is the group to do it!!

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
