10 Things About Beth Thorp & Mitchell Thorp Foundation

“Faith turns fear into courage and pain into purpose.
With God beside us, even the heaviest burdens become bearable. ”

When a child’s life is on the line, the Mitchell Thorp Foundation is the lifeline that holds the family together. Most people do not realize that when a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, it is not just a medical crisis, it is a financial, emotional, and logistical crisis too. Parents are forced to choose between earning a paycheck and being by their child’s side. Siblings are left wondering why everything has changed. And the weight of mounting bills can feel heavier than the diagnosis itself. Mitchell Thorp Foundation steps in when families are at their breaking point with compassion, resources, and hope. Through financial support, emotional care, and a community that will not let them walk these challenges alone, families can focus on the most important thing: their child’s healing. Beth Thorp is the Co-Founder & Executive Director of Mitchell Thorp Foundation.

#6 I have two standard Golden Doodles named Teddy and Bear. Both are Service Dogs that I can take with me to the children’s hospitals.

#7 Beth Thorp the author of “ANEW Creation”, a true and inspiring story published by Morgan James in New York. In 2023, I collaborated with two film producers to adapt this transformational journey into a feature-length screenplay, bringing its message of hope and renewal to life on screen.

#9 Giving back to our community is deeply personal to me. When our family was facing overwhelming medical bills during Mitchell’s illness, the community wrapped its arms around us. More than 600 people came to a walkathon held in his honor. Many were complete strangers who simply heard our story and wanted to help. Their compassion changed us forever. That experience became the foundation for everything we do today.

#10 The Mitchell Thorp Foundation serves as a wraparound support system for 16 children’s hospitals nationwide, providing families with the help they need when life feels overwhelming.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
