“My entire life has essentially consisted of going where
I wasn’t invited. If I hadn’t, I would be no where now.”
– Dr. Alexandra Kharazi

The mission of the American Heart Association is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s signature women’s initiative, dedicated to raising awareness of cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death in women. The movement empowers women to take charge of their heart health, while addressing critical gaps in research, education and care. Alexandra Kharazi, MD, FACS is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon; 2025 Woman of Impact Winner; Go Red for Women Executive Leadership Team Member; and Circle of Red Giving Society Chair with the American Heart Association.

#1  Alexandra Kharazi was born in the Ukraine and came to Los Angeles with my family when I was six years old. I speak Russian fluently, including reading and writing.

#2 Universal Studios Hollywood is my favorite place to go to – especially when I get to experience it through the eyes of my six-year-old daughter, Harper. There is nothing better than seeing the world feel magical to her!

#3 Hawaii is still top of my list of places I would like to visit. I would love the chance to experience the islands’ natural beauty.

#4 I am currently working toward earning my pilot’s license – learning how to fly has been exhilarating!

#5 The Hours is my favorite movie.

#6 In 2023, I published a book, The Heart of Fear, which explores perseverance, medicine, and finding purpose through adversity.  Alexandra Kharazi especially proud that my daughter will be publishing her first book in Spring 2026, A Book of a Bunny’s Life by Harper.

#7 My patients continuously renew my faith, ground my purpose, and remind me why this work matters. Each day in the operating room reminds me that purpose is not something you postpone, it is something you live.

#8 Giving back fills my cup. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, I see firsthand not only the disease, but the systemic challenges that contribute to it. Being involved allows me to use my voice beyond the operating room – to advocate, raise awareness, and support prevention. I believe real change happens when those closest to the problem help to lead the solution.

#9 Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States, and I confront its impact every single day as a surgeon. Partnering with the American Heart Association allows me to fight this disease on multiple fronts, not just when patients reach my operating table, but long before they ever need surgery.

#10 Go Red for Women is funding critical, lifesaving research to address the unique risk factors and needs of women.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
