One meaningful way Promises2Kids carries out its mission to create a brighter future for foster children is through its vital Camp Connect program, that addresses the critical need to reunite brothers and sisters who are separated in the foster care system. While the annual overnight summer camp is a cornerstone of the program, Camp Connect also offers frequent day activities – giving siblings the chance to stay connected and strengthen their bond all year long.
Tigers, bears, penguins, gorillas, and more were among the exotic highlights as Camp Connect visited the sprawling, world-famous San Diego Zoo.
Siblings Justin (8) and Dylan (12) were among the 45 foster children in attendance. The brothers entered care in 2023 due to severe abuse and neglect. They were separated and have been living apart ever since. Since 2024, they have been regulars at Camp Connect events.
As they wandered through the forest canopy, outback, and aviary, the two were never more than a few steps from each other, with Dylan snapping wildlife photos on his phone for them to enjoy between habitats.
At lunchtime, Dylan asked Justin which kind of ice cream he wanted, then walked to the counter and ordered two. When his brother handed it to him, Justin was beaming with joy. With a big smile on his face and the ice cream melting all over his hands, he showed off the treat that his brother got for him to volunteers and campers alike, anyone he could find. He was so proud he almost forgot about eating it. Once finished, Dylan helped him get cleaned up and they were off to explore the park for the rest of the afternoon.
As Promises2Kids often finds at these big events, every moment including the little ones, are truly cherished.
Camp Connect was created for moments just like this – where siblings can laugh, play, and simply be kids together. Thanks to the generosity of our community, siblings like Justin and Dylan can continue making memories and spending meaningful time together, month after month.
