Brothers and sisters entering foster care, unfortunately, are very likely to be split up and live in separate homes. Camp Connect, one of the critical programs offered by local nonprofit, Promises2Kids, reunites those brothers and sisters through monthly events and an annual summer camp. Promises2Kids is dedicated to creating a brighter future for foster children in San Diego by providing the hope, support, and opportunities they need to change their lives for the better.
Camp Connect recently held its annual “Roar and Snore” overnight at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This event is one of the highlights of the year because overnights are a chance for siblings to spend extra time together.
Rubin (12) and Ayla (8) entered care in 2022 due to severe abuse and neglect. They were regulars at Camp Connect monthly events, but since April of this year, other obligations like extracurriculars have made it hard to get together.
This was a special weekend though. Rubin was still able to make his football game and join his sister at the park. Anxious to see Rubin after so long, Ayla continued asking when her brother would arrive and was told he would be there after his football game. Ayla, always looked up to her brother, and was shocked to learn that he even played football.
She was very impressed with him and jokingly asked when he was going pro. They caught up on each other’s lives very quickly and set about exploring the park with the other campers.
After private guided tours and encountering rhinos, antelopes, cheetahs, and more, the group headed to the exclusive campground and settled in at a big campfire complimented by s’mores and hot chocolate.
When it was time for bed in their tents, Rubin assured and promised Ayla that she would see him again as soon as they woke up, a promise he emphatically knew he could keep.
The following morning after a big breakfast, a private tram ride, and seeing more wildlife, it was time for hugs and goodbyes. Rubin and Ayla, along with many other siblings in attendance expressed their gratitude for an exciting weekend that was full of creating new memories with each other.
