One of the ways local nonprofit Promises2Kids fulfills its mission of creating a brighter future for foster children is through its impactful Camp Connect program. Camp Connect reunites brothers and sisters who are separated in foster care, giving them precious time together. While the annual overnight summer camp is the heart of the program, the frequent visits and group outings throughout the year help siblings stay connected and strengthen their lifelong bond.
Thrills, laughter, and a touch of Halloween magic filled the air at San Diego’s historic Belmont Park. Brothers and sisters came together for a fun-filled day in the sun, going on rides, playing laser tag, getting their faces painted, rock climbing, and enjoying sweet treats along the boardwalk.
Among them were sisters Jackie (12), Chelsea (8), and their little brother David (7). They entered foster care in 2023 due to severe abuse and neglect, and that was the last time they shared a home or school. Though they have been living apart in separate homes, they joined Camp Connect soon after, and they have been reuniting at regular events since then.
After lunch, they headed straight to the rock-climbing wall. Chelsea was fearless, the first one on the wall. She was halfway up before she called down to Jackie to join her in a race to the top. Jackie was catching up quickly before they both called down for David to join. Standing there, looking up at the sheer vertical climb, he was nervous and a little scared. But he also saw his two big sisters and would not miss out. Jackie climbed back down to help David with his harness from below. She coached him up, pointing out each perfect foot or handhold.
And that is how they worked their way up the wall together – uncertainty, thrilling excitement, and an unbreakable closeness that events like this keep alive.
For many siblings like Jackie, Chelsea, and David, days like this are rare chances to simply be together, sharing smiles, laughter, and moments that last well after a Saturday afternoon. None of it would be possible without generous supporters like you, who help create lasting memories for children living apart in foster care.
