Mission Fed’s Growth and Community Impact Over 60 Years

Share

Caring for Community

Mission Federal Credit Union (Mission Fed) celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2021, and throughout that time, its core mission has remained the same: Earning trust, investing in its members’ success and caring for the community. It’s the credit union’s way to achieve the double-bottom line goal of serving members and the community.

In record-setting time of just one year, and during a global pandemic, Mission Fed grew from $4B to $5B in assets. President and CEO Debra Schwartz believes that a key driver for their growth was the fact the organization kept all branches open. Additionally, the call center remained open and available, and they expanded digital and online options. Mission Fed also provided numerous options for borrowers, and waived over $2.5 million in fees. Members appreciated Mission Fed’s focus, communication, and the fact their money was kept safe and sound. As a result, the organization saw growth across all categories – including opening a new branch.

“At a time in our industry where we are seeing banks and credit unions close branch doors, we are fortunate to open a new branch for our members – and in a location where we are needed most,” said Schwartz of the organization’s 33rd branch, located in Oceanside. Mission Fed celebrated by donating to YMCA Youth & Family Services to support youth homelessness.

With the generosity of its members and the San Diego community, Mission Fed raised and donated a total of $680,342 for local non-profit organizations in 2020, reaching those who were most in need. Schwartz coined this endeavor as the proudest moment of her career. “We grow and become stronger as our community grows and becomes stronger,” said Schwartz.

Throughout 2021, Mission Fed also enhanced its efforts in supporting the robust San Diego Hispanic community. The credit union proudly supported organizations like Mana de San Diego, PIQE, Southwestern College Foundation, MAAC, San Diego Latino Film Festival and more.
