Marquita’s Journey with Guardian Scholars | Promises2Kids

Share

One way local nonprofit, Promises2Kids fulfills its mission of creating a brighter future for foster children is through the Guardian Scholars program, which helps current and former foster youth reach their educational and career goals. The challenge of transitioning from foster care to complete independence at such a critical time is met by wrap-around support, case management, therapy, mentoring, and a financial stipend, helping youth pursue the futures they deserve.

One such Guardian Scholar is Marquita, a student at San Diego State University who studied child development and double minored in counseling and social change and cultural proficiency. Marquita graduated this May and plans to pursue graduate school.

Marquita and her three siblings were removed from their mother’s care due to abuse and neglect, entering foster care at the age of 11 with only her sister. Over time, Marquita lived in five different foster homes and attended five different schools. During her time in care, she experienced homelessness twice, and couch surfed between friends’ homes. Marquita was also diagnosed with depression and something therapy has helped her overcome.

As a Guardian Scholar, Marquita participates in several groups including Advocates for Change, Women’s Leadership Network, and the Black, LGBTQIA+, and Parenting Groups. She was paired with her mentor who has been a positive role model in her life and someone she has grown very close with. Marquita works as a Promises2Kids Youth2Youth Team Lead, mentoring and engaging with current foster youth through a lived experience lens.

In addition, Marquita volunteers at local schools as a tutor and a Teacher’s Aide, and with Banding Together – a nonprofit supporting students on the spectrum with music therapy. Being a parent figure is an important role in her life, supporting her sister in raising four children.

Marquita is an inspiration to other foster youth and is a sterling example of what can be accomplished with drive and the right support.

Guardian Scholars was created for bright futures like these, to let foster youth know that they are still believed in and cared for. Thanks to the generous support of the community, many more will be able to follow in Marquita’s footsteps.
