From Revolution to Republic Celebrating Two and a Half Centuries of Women’s Military Service

Share

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026,  the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is dedicated to honoring an inspiring legacy woven into the fabric of our nation’s history: the contributions and sacrifices of women in uniform over two and a half centuries of American military service. On March 25, 2026,  the Memorial will host its fifth annual Women’s History Tribute and Brunch, presented by Kaiser Permanente. Against the stunning backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, where nearly 7,000 plaques with over 10,000 veteran stories are etched in the black granite lining its walls, this special event recognizes the remarkable impact women have made in defense of our  freedoms, from the Revolutionary War to today’s conflicts.

Long  before women gained the right to vote, they were already serving the cause of American independence. Revolutionary War nurses risked their lives caring for wounded soldiers. During World War II, the Women Airforce Service Pilots flew every type of military aircraft, logging over 60 million miles. Vietnam War nurses saved countless lives in combat zones. Today, women serve in every branch and every role, from combat engineers to fighter pilots to Space Force guardians.

The Women’s History Tribute and Brunch, a perennial sellout event, will honor Maj. Greta Hamilton, US Air Force (ret), Director of the Fort Rosecrans and Miramar National Cemeteries. Following twenty years of uniformed service, she retired and dedicated her life to preserving military history and veterans’ legacies. Most notably and honorably, she has been involved in projects related to African American military contributions, including the digitization of records surrounding the Harlem Hellfighters. This exclusive event brings together over 150 veterans, active-duty military, community leaders, and advocates for a morning of recognition and celebration. Attendees will enjoy breathtaking views from San Diego’s iconic Memorial while connecting with others who share a commitment to honoring military service.

Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, founded in 1952, stands as a living testament to the courage and sacrifice of all who  have served. Through educational programs, commemorative tributes, and meaningful ceremonies, the Memorial ensures these stories continue to inspire future generations.
