For many teenage boys, the path to adulthood can feel uncertain and overwhelming. For Danny, that uncertainty turned into a deep struggle after the devastating loss of his mother at just 14 years old. Adopted as an infant, Danny had been the center of his mom’s world. When she passed away, he spiraled into grief and isolation, convinced the world was against him.
“I was out of school for mental health reasons and honestly didn’t want to be around anyone,” Danny recalls. “At first, I didn’t want anything to do with Boys to Men. But then I thought, I’ll just give it a try and see how it goes. It changed my life for the better.”
Boys to Men Mentoring (B2M) provides weekly school-based mentoring “circles” where boys can be honest, vulnerable, and supported by both peers and trained mentors. These circles offer a safe place for boys to share struggles, be held accountable, and learn how to make positive choices for the men they want to become. For Danny, those circles became a turning point.
“There were times I didn’t even want to be here,” he admits. “But I’d go to Boys to Men, and it changed my perspective a hundred times over. I realized I wasn’t alone. As soon as you’re willing to be vulnerable, they go there with you. They walk beside you.” Danny has now been part of Boys to Men for three years. Through that time, he has faced grief and mental health challenges, but he has also discovered resilience, strength, and brotherhood. The program’s consistent presence gave him the tools to rewrite his story, shifting from hopelessness to a renewed outlook on life.
Stories like Danny’s are at the heart of Boys to Men’s mission. Every week, mentors step into school gyms and classrooms across San Diego County to meet boys where they are, offering guidance, compassion, and accountability. The results speak for themselves: boys who once felt lost or disconnected find belonging, purpose, and a vision for their future.
Danny now encourages other families to get involved. “If you have a son who is struggling, or even one who just wants to learn how to grow into a good man, join Boys to Men,” he says. “It changed my life. I know it can change theirs, too.”
In San Diego alone, thousands of young men face challenges like fatherlessness, poverty, and mental health struggles. Boys to Men Mentoring steps into that gap, helping boys discover who they are and who they can become. “Danny’s story is just one example of the life-changing impact of mentorship,” adds B2M Co-Founder Joe Sigurdson. “It is a reminder of what is possible when boys are given the support and guidance they deserve.”
