Boys to Men Mentoring Network San Diego | Empowering Local Youth

Share

Boys to Men Mentoring Network started in 1996 in La Mesa, California. The founders were Herb Sigurdson, Joe Sigurdson, and Craig McClain. Herb had once led Father Flanagan’s Boys Town and dedicated his life to helping boys grow into strong men.

Joe and Craig wanted to support young men without fathers in their lives. They created a safe place where men could guide boys through life’s challenges. The program teaches self-reflection, positive thinking, and responsibility.

Our Work in San Diego

Boys to Men Mentoring Network San Diego serves schools and communities across the county. Since 1996, more than 12,000 boys and men in San Diego have been part of the program.

In 2009, we started the first in-school mentoring group in the San Diego public school system. This model has been a big success. School leaders, parents, and boys all agree it makes a real difference.

By 2019, Boys to Men Mentoring was running weekly groups at 35 San Diego schools. More than 800 boys were getting support from caring mentors each week.

How the Program Works

Our mentoring groups are intergenerational and community-based. Boys learn from older mentors while also supporting each other. The program helps them:

  • Build confidence
  • Make better choices
  • Stay accountable
  • Connect with positive role models

This approach is now being used around the world, but San Diego remains the heart of our work.
