One of the ways local nonprofit Promises2Kids San Diego fulfills its mission of creating a brighter future for foster children is through its critical Camp Connect program. Camp Connect reunites brothers and sisters who are separated and living apart in foster care, and though the traditional overnight summer camp each year anchors the calendar, monthly visits, and group outings give siblings the opportunity to see one another and maintain their bond throughout the year.
Sun, salt air, and deep blue waters awaited Camp Connect as they set sail on a recent whale-watching cruise. “Oohs” and “aahs” abounded as several whales were spotted shyly peeking out through the waves, joined by the dolphins surfing in the wake.
Among them were sisters Kalani (12) and Hailey (7). When they entered care due to severe abuse and neglect, they were separated and ended up living in different homes. However, they were soon enrolled in Camp Connect so they could reunite at events like this.
They were in their own little world as they set out from the dock. Each youth was given an ocean-themed puzzle book at the start of the trip. Kalani put hers aside to work on Hailey’s so they could fill out the crosswords as a team while the ship made its way to sea.
They moved to the top of the boat where the crew set out bait for campers to entice birds and sea life. Hailey plunged her hand into the bucket, unafraid of getting her hands on small wiggly fish. Kalani hesitated, but after seeing the smile on Hailey’s face, rolled up her sleeves and dipped in as well. They joined in tossing the bait to the ever-growing flock of birds, gleefully ducking their swoops and watching them dive into the wake.
As Promises2Kids often finds at these big events, every moment is truly cherished.
Camp Connect was created for moments like these, where siblings can continue to have fun and just be kids together. Thanks to the generous support of the community, siblings like Kalani and Hailey will continue to spend cherished time with each other month after month.
