“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
– Winston Churchill

Believing in the power of theatre to startle the soul, ignite debate and embrace the diversity of the community in which it serves, Cygnet Theatre is fearlessly committed to the dissection, examination and celebration of the human story through the medium of live theatre. Cygnet Theatre and NTC Foundation are partnering to transform historic former Navy building 178 at Arts District Liberty Station into a world-class performing arts venue for San Diego, creating a permanent home for Cygnet Theatre. Trulette M. Clayes, Co-Trustee of the Joseph Clayes II Charitable Trust, recently made an endowment contribution to name the main theatre at the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center – nicknamed “The Joan” for the late philanthropist, Joan Jacobs.

#2 My Mom always says about me “I have never met anyone that turns on the music as soon as her feet hit the ground”.

#3 I lean toward tropical places; Mexico, Hawaii, Bora Bora, however, Safari in Africa was amazing!

#4 I have always wanted to go to Greece, Japan, Australia, and return to Africa to see the gorillas.

#6 I actually stumbled upon the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center while driving by the
construction site on the way to an appointment. My Uncle did his naval training at the Naval Training Center and was a big fan of the theater, so it piqued my interest.

#7 Favorite Movies: “The Sting”, “A Room with a View”, “The Sound of Music”, “Thomas Crowne Affair”, “Forest Gump”, “Under the Tuscan Sun”, “Bridesmaids”.

#8 I would love to become fluent in Spanish and play guitar.

#9 M. Larry Lawrence was very influential in my enrolling and graduating from college. I worked as a manicurist at the hair salon my mother owned at the Hotel del Coronado. One of my clients, M. Larry Lawrence, the hotel’s owner, consistently would ask if I had registered to return to college, and finally said he would not talk to me until I was. I registered the following week! This led to a fulfilling career as a CPA focusing on Not-for-Profit organizations.

#10 The Cygnet Theatre is moving! In September, the curtain rises on Cygnet Theatre’s brand-new home at The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center at Arts District Liberty Station.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
