Strengthening Families Protects Children

Home Start’s mission is to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities. Each day, Home Start’s amazing program staff are helping to break the cycles of poverty, homelessness, abuse and neglect here in San Diego. The resources and support Home Start offers – made possible by their generous funding partners, donors, and volunteers – are helping children and families have brighter futures and the opportunity to thrive. Steven Ephraim serves as the Home Start Board President.

#1 I was born and raised in North Hollywood and then moved to San Diego 18 years ago.

#2 My wife and my 3 daughters are very important to me. Whether it is a movie, theme park, or just running errands with them, this allows me the time to reflect on why I do what I do. Also, having friends over with their families so we can all enjoy some relaxation is very comforting.

#3 “A Christmas Story” would have to be on my list of favorite movies. I remember watching it countless times with my family when I was very young, and it is now on a constant loop during the holiday season for my girls.

#4 Being a sports fan, especially of college football, I would love to visit many of the stadiums and attend a rivalry football game in the Southeast, perhaps a Georgia, Florida, or Alabama game.

#5 I used to run many full and half marathons. I have run a full marathon in San Diego and Hawaii, and one year I ran a total of 12 long distance races.

#6 I want to be an example to my daughters and show them we are fortunate, yet help them understand there are individuals who need support.

#7 I find that books specific to your personal growth that transcends into your career and the community are my favorites. I love the author John Maxwell and all his books.

#8 I met Home Start Director of Philanthropy Mark Lagace at a networking group. Mark spoke about the population they serve, and I immediately knew this was an important mission. I have strong family values and know the importance of having the support of family, parents, and a spouse/partner.

#9 Our vision at Home Start is for every child in San Diego to have a safe, stable, and nurturing home.

#10 Funds raised from our Blue Ribbon Gala support all of Home Start’s life-changing programs and services for local children and families. Our Gala is held each April in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
