“Nothing will work unless you do.”

– Maya Angelou

For more than 80 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization serving the men and women in the U.S. military and their families. With over 140,000 active-duty military personnel within 4,526 square miles of San Diego County, USO is home to six major military installations and more than 25 smaller installations. In 2020, the military saw an increase of over 7,000 active-duty members in the San Diego area and even more military are projected to arrive over the next five years. As a USO Volunteer, Donor, and Mom of USO Board Member – Brianna Ahern, Sherry Ahern’s dedication to the USO will ensure that the needs of these expanding military families will be met.

#3 I was a Jazz dancer in my teens and twenties and performed all over San Diego. I still love to dance!

#4 I would like to master the art of organization.

Two Pets

#6 We have our amazing Black Labrador Maximus who is 17 years old, and our new addition Archie, an 8-month-old Golden Retriever.

#7 The USO is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization and not a part of the Department of Defense or Department of Homeland Security. In 1987, the USO signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Defense that states the USO is “the principal channel representing civilian concern for the United States armed forces worldwide.”

#8 During the pandemic, USO San Diego provided support and delivered impactful programming with over 250,000 total service instances.

#9 The USO has a wide range of services that not only supports our armed forces but also families like Yolanda’s. As a military spouse and mom, Yolanda recalls that on a particularly stressful day, the USO volunteers saw her struggling and welcomed her with open arms. Moving from Houston to San Diego, the USO programs and services, addressed all the different needs to help care for her military family. The Farmers Markets provides amazing food, the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program keeps her children engaged to read and stay connected with their dad as he serves our nation, TeenTalk guided her teenage daughter in transitioning to the military life, and MilSpouse Connect has personally helped her.

#10 The Stars & Stripes gala featuring a performance by Wayne Newton will support all of USO San Diego services and programs that strengthen our military by keeping them connected to family, home and country.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
