“Sharing the Caring”

The mission of The George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Center is to provide affordable and accessible adult day care and support services to families affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory impairment diseases. The Glenner Centers do this by providing innovative adult day care programs, family support, case management, crisis intervention, family and community education, advocacy, information and referrals. Scott J. Tarde was asked to join the Board of Directors of the George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Center in 2013 and now serves as their CEO/Executive Director.

#1 My grandfather had dementia towards the end of his life and although I was young, I recall firsthand the devastating impact that it had on our family.

#2 When I was 19, I had my first job as a caregiver in a Memory Care Community taking care of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease.

#3 Our co-founders, Dr. Glenner and his wife Joy, gifted us with a model of care that gives individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their families a place to be seen and supported.

#4 We are a non-profit organization that manages 3 specialized adult day centers for people with dementia. We engage our guests in activities to keep the brain active which can help to slow the rate of cognitive decline. At the same time, our guests’ exhausted caregivers get a much-needed break.

#5 We are a very affordable option and an alternative to home care and/or residential placement.

#6 We provide continued purpose and dignity in the lives of our participants, as well as provide the necessary critical support to Family Caregivers who so desperately need to know that they are not alone.

#7 We had a participant that used to be an accountant and was initially hesitant to attend our centers. We created mock invoices for her to “assist” us with and created real purpose and meaning to her day. From then on, she attended our center on a daily basis.

#8 Scott J. Tarde truly feel that the Glenner Centers and the Town Square® model should be the standard of care for dementia in our country, and I will work every day to advocate for that. Individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia and their Family Caregivers deserve this type of support and services in every city in America and beyond.

#9 The Gala is meaningful to me to celebrate my 10 years as CEO but more importantly to showcase the impact that the Glenner Centers have and continue to have in San Diego County for the last 43 years.

#10 Scott J. Tarde blessed to be part of this non-profit organization and honored to preserve and expand their vision.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
