10 Things About Samer Khouli & Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego

“The best is yet to come.”

Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (The House/RMHCSD) provides a “home-away-from-home” for families with children being treated for serious, often life-threatening conditions at local hospitals. The House provides a welcoming and convenient home base where families can take care of their basic needs so they can better focus on caring for their critically ill or injured child. The House is the only service of its kind that is open to families caring for children at any San Diego area hospital. Samer Khouli is the CEO of TCWGlobal as well as a supporter and advocate of the House.

#1 Samer Khouli was born in Syria but moved to San Diego when I was five. I have lived in Tierrasanta, Clairemont, and now Point Loma – so San Diego really shaped who I am. I would love to return to Syria one day – when the civil unrest ends. I hope to do something meaningful for the people there.

#2 I love Japan, but honestly, as long as I am with good people, I will find joy and beauty wherever I go.

#3 Hobbies: Photography, playing video games (even though I know I am supposed to skip that one!), design, business culture, and I love being a restaurateur.

#4 Favorite Movie: Mean Girls – because it is hilarious. But if you are looking for something more serious, Tombstone is a classic.

#5 I am old school – I love reading the Bible. Every time I open it, I discover something new. Recently I also enjoyed The Mountain Is You.

#6 Cooper is my amazing 9-year-old female boxer. She is a sweetheart and even has a playground named after her at the House: “Cooper’s Corner.”

#7 Samer Khouli admire Chris Hilken, our pastor at College Avenue Church, for his total commitment to making the Bible relevant and impactful. His diligence and thoughtfulness inspire me to live with the same intentionality.

#8 I love seeing God’s fingerprint in everything and everyone. When I can recognize His design and beauty, it helps me love more, give more, and live more joyfully.

#9 I cannot imagine feeling gratitude without giving, or joy without selflessness. I believe love should extend even to people you may never meet.

#10 Samer Khouli volunteered at the House over 25 years ago when I was in college. I did not fully understand it then, but I knew I was giving some solace to families going through unimaginable times – and it gave me something meaningful too. Years later, after getting to know the CEO, Chuck Day and the RMHCSD team, I saw what a world-class organization it truly is. I am grateful to support it. Plus, our employees now volunteer monthly, and it has had a huge positive impact on our culture and brought joy to so many of our team members.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
