#1 I grew up in Austin, Texas. My 8th-grade science teacher, Mrs. Richmond, sparked my lifelong interest in life sciences.

#2 I do not care much for cooking on a regular basis, but I love a good meal and collecting recipes.

#3 I love to travel internationally every year; some of my favorites have been Myanmar, Cuba, Bali, and the Greek Islands. I would love to visit Portugal for the international beach volleyball tournament.

#4 Bucket list: I would love to go parasailing or paragliding.

#5 I do not have a favorite movie but “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and “To Sir, With Love” come to mind.

#6 Decompressing for me is either playing beach volleyball or just sitting quietly, sometimes watching sports or “Emily in Paris”.

#7 Giving back is fulfilling, knowing my actions positively impact others fuels my passion.

#8 Having always worked in nonprofits, I was drawn to United Way of San Diego County’s mission of ensuring educational success and financial security, which aligns with my background in education and my desire to make a meaningful impact.

#9 At United Way, we believe you cannot start early enough. That is why we say ‘cradle to career’, and we mean it. The early years are essential to develop the emotional and learning skills that help children succeed in school and life. Promoting and developing these skills, while strengthening and supporting family stability, are critical to improving long-term outcomes for students and their families.

#10 Our ‘Evening of Wonder’ fundraiser will feature hand-crafted cocktails, exquisite hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind items, and fun interactive activities. The funds raised during this event will directly support United Way of San Diego County’s transformative work to uplift the San Diego community through education and economic mobility.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
