Everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time

Last year, the Anderson Plumbing, Heating & Air team collected new toys for “Toys for Tots” and piled them high into Mary Jean Anderson’s vintage white with pink trim 1967 Cadillac Coupe DeVille convertible.  NBC’s Whitney Southwick captured Mary Jean’s arrival on air which made a huge impact and helped encourage others to donate.

Mary Jean believes we should all develop a quality of caring for others. She knows from personal experience that if you help others to become the best they can be, your life will be meaningful and joyful in many unexpected ways.

#1 I am a proud native San Diegan! My maternal grandparents were Italian immigrants and were one of the first families to start a business on the famous San Francisco Wharf.

#2 We have been fortunate to travel to Italy several times and completely fell in love with the place!  Hopefully, we will have many more adventures exploring and getting to know more of the country.

#3 I have always been a strong swimmer, surfer, boogie boarder, water skier – anything in the water.  Next on my bucket list is whitewater river rafting in class 3 or 4 rapids!

#8 I never thought I would run a plumbing and HVAC company with over 200 employees! As I have become more involved in the industry on a national scale, I have been able to take a leadership role in bringing more females and military veterans into the industry.

#10 We get to turn negative situations into positive experiences every day in our line of work.  No one calls us unless they have a problem – this is stressful for our clients and our employees love it when they can turn someone’s day around by fixing the problem.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
