Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) supports infants, children, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, along with their families. Through person-centered services, Home of Guiding Hands empowers individuals across San Diego and Imperial Counties to grow, gain independence, and live fulfilling lives. Jessica Wood is the Infant-Toddler Developmental Assessment Program Manager for HGH.

#1 Jessica Wood grew up in Huntington Beach (Surf City USA!).

 

#2 My father has deeply influenced me through his servant leadership, compassion, and unwavering faith. His example continues to guide how I approach life and leadership.

 

#3 I studied abroad in Salzburg, Austria, and fell in love with its scenery, culture, and musical history. I would love to return to Europe and visit Belgium and Spain.

 

#4 With 16-month-old twins, hobbies are limited, but my husband and I love watching Formula 1 races while the boys nap. I also enjoy baking and playing Euro-style board games.

 

#5 I am a vocalist in a funk/jazz-fusion band, but I especially love singing Disney songs.

#6 We have a 15-year-old American Cocker Spaniel we adopted over a decade ago from San Diego Spaniel Rescue.

 

#7 Giving back is how I express gratitude and live out my faith. Through my work, I strive to provide hope and support to families while empowering them in their child’s development journey. Being part of Home of Guiding Hands allows me to extend that impact even further, helping connect families to meaningful resources and support. I truly find joy in helping families navigate services for their loved ones and feel supported along the way.

 

#8 One of our most impactful programs is the Infant Development Assessment (IDA) program, which helps identify developmental delays early in a child’s life. When milestones are missed, early evaluation and intervention are critical in shaping long-term outcomes.

 

#9 Jessica Wood began working with HGH about 10 years ago as a Speech Language Pathologist completing infant-toddler assessments, the same program I now lead. I have always been inspired by the mission and feel honored to support families during such an important stage, while being part of an organization that serves individuals across all stages of life.

 

#10 Our team partners with families to provide guidance, answers, and assistance during what can be an overwhelming time. Proceeds from the Gala will go towards the full range of programs and services at Home of Guiding Hands, helping us continue to provide essential care, early intervention, and life skills supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world.
