#1 I grew up in London, England.

#2 I had a P.E. teacher in high school who pushed me to the limit physically and emotionally and he seemed, at first, unreasonably critical. By the end of high school, he had selected me for a leadership role, and he really impressed upon me the importance of self-discipline and physical fitness.

#3 When I was in college, my roommate and I joined the (British) Army reserves to make some money. We were enticed with the promise that we would be taught to drive trucks, but the reality was far less interesting!

#4 Favorite travel destination: Palm Springs and the surrounding desert. The landscapes, climate, and architecture all combine to create a place of reflection and calmness for me.

#5 Book Recommendation: I read daily and devour anything fiction but appreciate great character development. I am a huge fan of John Grisham and read just about anything he writes.

#6 Mylo is our boxer. He has a sweet and trusting personality and he is as enthusiastic about life as an older dog as when he was a puppy!

#7 I joined an advisory committee for the Jewish Community Foundation as a young attorney and helped edit a planned giving guide, years before I joined the staff.

#8 Working in a community foundation is so incredibly empowering. Every day I am exposed to new stories about amazing nonprofit organizations to counter the bad news and suffering we see all around. Working with our incredibly kind and generous donors provides me with a great deal of satisfaction – to be able to support their collective impact.

#9 The Jewish Community Foundation seemed like a philanthropic “hub” to me, and it opened my eyes to the very diverse and passionate network of philanthropists in our community.

#10 The Jewish Community Foundation San Diego has facilitated more than $2 billion in grants since it began in 1967. JCF has historically been one of the largest philanthropic funders and a leader in charitable giving in San Diego. Thanks to the nearly one thousand Donor Advised Fund advisors, JCF has facilitated over 134,000 grants to more than 8,000 organizations in San Diego, Israel, and around the world.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
