“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
– Oscar Wilde

At Mission Fed, giving back to the community is the centerpiece of their mission, vision and values. One of Mission Fed’s most impactful initiatives is the “Community is Everything” Fund, a name that perfectly captures Mission Fed’s commitment to making a difference in San Diego. With a remarkable investment of $500,000 this fund has been instrumental in helping local nonprofit organizations secure the financial resources they need to enhance their impact. Jason Bowser is Mission Fed’s Senior Vice President of Branch Network, Member Investment Services, and Business Development.

#1 Jason Bowser grew up in San Diego – mainly in East County – San Carlos and Santee, but now I call Poway home.

#2 We love staycations, because why would you want to leave San Diego! We enjoy beach camping and San Elijo is a place we have been going now for over 30 years.

#3 Jason Bowser enjoy being out in the surf or on the golf course. I have been an extreme sport fan my whole life, but have never been skydiving!

#4 The original version of “Point Break” is my favorite movie. What banker doesn’t love a good Bank Robbery movie?

#5 Book Recommendation: “Leaders Eat Last” – by Simon Sinek.

#6 Giving back to the community is one of the greatest activities we can do to manifest kindness. And as Ralph Waldo said, “You cannot do kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.”

#7 I am passionate about youth education and activities. I have spent the past 25 years supporting the YMCA. I have logged countless volunteer hours at different organizations throughout San Diego and will continue to do this, supporting with both time and financial support.

#8 I have had a lot of individuals involved with the YMCA over the years who have impacted me. From Dick Webster, Joe Benoit, Margie Newman and now Todd Tidbits. All of these leaders have inspired me to do this as well.

#9 Jason Bowser have been in the financial institution industry for over 25 years, and had always admired the hyper-local dedication from Mission Fed. When I had an opportunity a few years ago to come work for the credit union, I jumped at the opportunity to align my personal values with an organization that has the same.

#10 Mission Fed is partnering with the Jacob & Cushman San Diego Food Bank through September – Hunger Awareness Month – to raise funds for the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which provides weekend packages of food to elementary school children who face chronic hunger when free school meals are unavailable. Throughout the month of September, visit any Mission Fed branch in San Diego County to donate to the San Diego Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack Program.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
