“Don’t stress the small stuff”
The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD) generates and distributes funds to innovative programs that enhance the quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in San Diego and Imperial Counties. The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities plays a crucial role in our community, providing emergency assistance to San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) clients during unforeseen challenges. Over the past decade, FDD has disbursed nearly $2 million to more than 2,500 SDRC clients. SDRC supports a diverse and expanding client base, now serving over 43,000 individuals – a significant increase of 4,000 clients within the past year. Notably, 80% of emergency funds are dedicated to helping families with rent, deposits, and mortgage payments. Jan Adams is the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities Board Chair, Board of Directors.
#1 I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland.
#2 I have always enjoyed U.S. history, especially Colonial, and when I was young, I thought being a tour guide in Jamestown or Williamsburg would have been great.
#3 Favorite travel destinations: the Island of Kauai and Mammoth Lakes/the Sierras.
#4 I would like to visit every National Park – at least those in the contiguous 48, which is a work in progress.
#5 Best way to decompress: Physical activity, such as running, has always been my escape from stress; now, I also really enjoy hiking.
#6 Favorite Movie: “Chariots of Fire” and “The Boys in the Boat.” Both demonstrate the struggles and challenges of the same era but in different sports.
#7 The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities is building a community that supports diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) in San Diego and Imperial Counties.
#8 It simply feels good to give back, and I have always believed that whatever you give or do for others always comes back to you many times over in joy and satisfaction.
#9 I joined the Board of Foundation for Developmental Disabilities to represent a supported organization, Home of Guiding Hands, where I was CFO for 27 years. When I retired from HGH, I was so committed to what the FDD was doing that I stayed on as a Community Member.
#10 The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities aims to provide equitable access to opportunities that maximize the potential of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our four impact areas include Employment, Family Support, Housing, and Self-Advocacy. Our Family Support category encompasses initiatives focused on health and wellness, resources, and social connections, assuring partnerships that drive high-impact results for our community.
