“Dream, Believe, Act, Achieve.”

As a dual language charter school, EJE Academies prepares students from diverse populations to excel in higher education and to be leaders in creating a just, global society. By increasing the rigor and quantity of writing and reading in both languages, through a lens of social justice, EJE students will be able to speak, read, write, and think critically. Griselda Delgado is the Executive Director of EJE Academies.

#1 Griselda Delgado was born in Mexicali, Mexico, and spent every school vacation there while growing up. During the school year, I lived in Los Angeles which allowed me to be immersed in two distinct yet equally formative environments.

#2 My grandmother was the guiding force of my upbringing and the living example of what unconditional love truly looks like. Through her actions, not just her words, she taught me integrity, resilience, and the courage to do what is right, even when it comes with sacrifice.

#3 Griselda Delgado join the U.S. Army immediately after high school – an experience that instilled in me a strong sense of discipline, responsibility, and service – values that continue to guide both my personal and professional life.

#4 I would like to take a cross-country road trip with the freedom to simply drive, follow my curiosity, and stop wherever something interesting or meaningful catches my attention. I like the idea of slowing down, being fully present, and discovering places organically.

#5 One book I highly recommend is “Solito” by Javier Zamora. It is a powerful, deeply moving true story about Zamora’s journey as a nine-year-old child traveling alone from El Salvador to the United States to reunite with his parents. The book is both heartbreaking and hopeful, offering an intimate look at migration through the eyes of a child.

#6 We have a pit bull mix named Loki who is loyal and gentle. We cannot imagine our family without him.

#7 Giving back to our community, especially to our youth, is deeply important to me because it is the most meaningful way to shape the future of our country.

#8 When we equip our youth with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate an increasingly complex world, we are not only supporting their individual success, we are contributing to a stronger, more just, and more hopeful future for generations to come.

#9 There is something incredibly powerful about seeing young people express themselves through music – their confidence, creativity, and growth come alive on stage.

#10 EJE offers students an extraordinary gift of giving students not only bilingualism in Spanish and English, but a third language through music. That holistic approach to learning of honoring culture, voice, and expression, is why I am proud to support EJE’s work.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
