Another Day in the Jungle!
MAAC’s mission is maximizing self-sufficiency with families and individuals through high-quality programs and advocacy in our communities. MAAC was founded 59 years ago by community leaders seeking solutions to address the hunger and poverty in their community. At the time, MAAC focused on serving the Mexican American population in San Diego County’s southern region. Today, MAAC builds on its Latino roots as it works towards equity and justice for all communities throughout San Diego County. Eddie Batiz is a MAAC Soiree Committee Member for the 2nd year.
#1 I grew up in the Bronx, New York City.
#2 My grandmother, Isabel Alvarado Rodriguez was a nurse who arrived in NYC from Puerto Rico, wanting to build a better life for her family. She took a risk, not knowing the language or anyone, and succeeded. She was honest, hardworking, and giving… She set the foundation for our family to follow.
#3 During the Disco Era of the 70’s, I was a DJ at a Discotheque, and a decent Latin Hustle Dancer. In fact, my wife and I won several dance contests.
#4 Favorite Travel Destination: Puerto Rico.
#5 Book Recommendation: “Swinging for the Fences” by Alex Montoya. Alex is a friend who is a triple amputee and has overcome many obstacles in life. He is a success story and inspiration to me and many others.
#6 I have a 6-year-old Great Dane named Charlie after my grandfather. Charlie is always by my side, and we have run hundreds of miles together. He is truly a Gentle Giant!
#7 I never want to forget where I came from and the struggles I faced. They are the same obstacles that many in our community face today.
#8 During the 90’s, I had the opportunity to interact directly with MAAC Staff. I have seen throughout the years their growth, magnificent work, and impact they have had with the San Diego Community. When Lidia Martinez invited me to join the Committee, it was a no brainer, “YES!”
#9 Just recently I met a young lady who is a property manager and was showing me some space in Oceanside. During the tour she said I looked familiar. She said she knew me from the MAAC Soiree Gala. She told me that she was a MAAC graduate and owed her entire success to the organization. MAAC believed in her when nobody else did.
#10 The funds raised from our 2024 MAAC Soiree allows us to be responsive in meeting the needs of our community through programs in our five pathways – Economic Development, Education, Health & Well-being, Housing, and Leadership Development & Advocacy – so that all San Diegans can build the life they want and deserve.
