Share

“The secret of success is doing what you have to do, better than you have to do it.”

Growing up in a family of lawyers, Dr. Hector Salazar-Reyes decided to take a different route and pursue what really called his attention, plastic surgery. After graduating medical school Summa Cum Laude and completing a total of 17 years of accredited medical education, Dr. Salazar became Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Salazar and his team at the La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre (LJCSC) believe in making a difference in our community as well as worldwide by supporting nonprofits that promote health, education, animals, art & culture.

#4 I was fortunate to live in Italy’s most important wine region before I went to medical school and on the top of my bucket list is to own a vineyard in France or Italy.

fashionable

#5 For the last 25 years, long before it was fashionable, I have been practicing intermittent fasting. This is not just for weight but for how I feel and perform. I am very disciplined and I only have one meal a day.

#6 What has really surprised me is the power of plastic surgery and how it transforms not just the physical but impacts lives for the better.

During surgery

#7 During a mission trip, we performed a complex reconstruction. At a follow-up visit, I discovered not only a well-healed lip and nose but a bright, cheerful gentleman who was already dating a girl from his high school.

Humble Design San Diego

#8 We have been working with Humble Design San Diego for two years now. Humble Design serves individuals, families, and veterans emerging from homelessness by transforming empty houses into welcoming homes using donated furniture and household goods. LJCSC recently furnished a home for a family of five that had struggled with homelessness for a year.

This year we raised $10,000 for The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, which provided 50,000 meals to local residents experiencing food insecurity.

Attitude of Gratitude

#10 Each November, we do an “Attitude of Gratitude” campaign. We encourage you to go to our website to learn more. You can also follow the hashtag #AttitudeOfGratitude throughout the month of November.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
