#1 Dr. Carol Gallagher grew up in Oklahoma in a small farming community.

#2 My mom was born at a time when women did not have careers. She was a substitute teacher and secretary at church, but she had always wanted to be a businesswoman. She raised my siblings and me and stayed at home. But I still remember a tear in her eye from never being able to pursue that dream. As a child, I wanted to be a successful businesswoman. I am so grateful to be living the life she was not able to.

#3 “Sound of Music” is my favorite movie. I watch it at least once a year. My family and I are incredibly close, and we would watch it annually growing up and sing along by heart.

#4 Patagonia is amazing – not only is it stunningly beautiful, but it has some of the most gorgeous hikes I have ever done. The lakes are breathtaking. I hiked 10-15 miles a day when there.

#5 We are going to New Zealand soon, and I am really looking forward to hiking, biking, kayaking and exploring with friends.

#6 Little Ms. Lola is my 10-pound Maltipoo. She turns 12 next month.

#7 Dr. Carol Gallagher was fortunate to live in London for about a year in a consulting role. I got to travel all over Europe on the weekends – it was so rewarding.

#8 Not everyone has had the same blessings I have had, coming from a wonderful family, getting an amazing education, and having the opportunity to be successful. And so, I am committed to supporting and inspiring other people, especially young women and girls, to be able to pursue their dreams.

#9 Home Start helps so many amazing mothers who are committed to being good moms. We provide them and their children with resources and hope to free themselves from poverty and domestic violence. By being a part of Home Start, I get to help them have brighter futures.

#10 Funds raised from our Blue Ribbon Gala support all of Home Start’s life-changing programs and services for local children and families.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
