“We make a living by what we get,
but we make a life by what we give.”
– Winston Churchill

The Mission of the San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) is “To serve and empower persons with developmental disabilities and their families to achieve their goals with community partners.” Since 1969, San Diego Regional Center has been a focal point in the community for persons with developmental disabilities (intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism, or other conditions similar to intellectual disabilities) living in San Diego and Imperial counties. San Diego Regional Center’s vision is for persons with developmental disabilities to live productive and satisfying lives as valued members of their communities. Dave Hadacek serves as the Board Chairman for the San Diego-Imperial Counties Developmental Services, Inc.

#6 We have a lovable and playful Golden Doodle named Stella.

#7 Our 3rd child, Holly, has taught me a lot about unconditional love and acceptance. Through Holly, the family met Governor Pete Wilson and his wife Gail when she helped light the California Capital Christmas Tree. The addition of Holly to our family has forever changed our boys’, Peggy’s and my life for the better.

#8 We all have something to offer. Wherever we are, there are others around us who we can help and support. Whatever we have, there are always others who have less and can benefit from our time and possessions. I am on a number of non-profit boards, as well as volunteer for organizations that support cancer research and housing for those with developmental disabilities.

#9 My involvement with San Diego Regional Center started over 30 years ago when our daughter was born with Down Syndrome and went through the “intake” process at San Diego Regional Center. As a parent with a disabled child, the mission of San Diego Regional Center spoke deeply to me. I have been on and off the Board for 23 years, serving in various leadership roles.

#10 The San Diego Regional Center does not have fundraisers; however, a related nonprofit organization, the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD), is committed to providing support where the Regional Center does not have the state-allocated funds. www.foundationfordd.org

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
