“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
– Eleanor Roosevelt

The mission of TrueCare is to improve the health status of our diverse communities by providing quality health care that is comprehensive, affordable, and culturally sensitive. At TrueCare, Care Within Reach is not just a phrase – it is a promise. It means creating a welcoming, no-wrong-door experience where individuals and families feel seen, heard, and supported. Cheryl Petersen Pine became the CFO at TrueCare in January 2024, after almost 15 years of experience in the community health center space.

#1 Cheryl Petersen Pine was born in San Jose and grew up for the most part in the Salinas Valley.

#2 I am fascinated with Italy. There are so many diverse regions and so much wonderful food! I would love to rent a villa in Tuscany for a month and travel the country.

#3 I love to cook, learn and read about food as well as watch culinary shows. I love how food is the cross-section of culture and creativity.

#4 When I graduated with my MBA, I celebrated by bungee jumping off the Bridge to Nowhere in Azusa Canyon with my kids. We agreed that we did not need to do it again, but the memories of the hike and the jump will live on forever.

#5 The movie “Boyhood” is filmed over 12 years with the same cast. When I saw the movie, Ethan Hawke, who played the father, arrived after the screening for questions. I had the opportunity to ask a question, and when I mentioned that my son was a huge fan, Ethan said, “I like your son.”

#6 We have two dogs that we rescued in 2024. Indiana and Jones are the life force of our home!

#7 Cheryl Petersen Pine read about 100 books a year. My favorite novel I read in 2025 was The Correspondent. It is epistolary fiction, or a story told in letters.

#8 I have spent more than 30 years working with nonprofits of varying focus. I have not always been able to contribute, and now that I am, it is important for me to do so.

#9 Earlier in my life, I was a patient of a health center, and I know how important the services are to the community.

#10 During these unprecedented times, access to care matters more than ever. Funds raised at the TrueCare Gala will help us continue delivering comprehensive, compassionate care to individuals and families across North San Diego and South Riverside Counties.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
