“I was early taught to work as well as play.
My life has been one long, happy holiday;
full of work and full of play
—I dropped the worry on the way—
and God was good to me every day.”
– John D. Rockefeller

#1 Chad Urie grew up in Seattle, Washington.

#2 I have been incredibly fortunate to have a remarkable father who not only built and sold a successful company but also guided me on how to be a great friend, father, son, husband, and leader. Most importantly, he taught me the value of being deeply involved in the lives of others. His dedication extended beyond business; he served as president and chairman of Union Gospel Mission and now leads with C3 Leaders.

#3 My family and I recently discovered a half-brother through 23andMe. Meeting him and his family after 50 years apart has been an incredible experience, and we are so glad to now share our lives together.

#4 My favorite travel destination is The Brando in French Polynesia.

#5 My favorite hobbies include traveling, quality time with my six adult kids, cars, golf, and fly fishing.

#6 Chad Urie have an uncropped Doberman Pinscher named Vis, a multiple-title champion.

#7 I do not necessarily view it as ‘giving back’ For me, it is about the joy of helping others navigate life – whether in work or in personal challenges. Both my successes and, perhaps even more so, my failures have given me lessons to share. Coaching and supporting others brings me immense happiness, and it has become one of my greatest passions.

#8 When I learned about San Diego Squared’s results with students, coupled with the genuine encouragement they provide, I was immediately drawn in. Meeting with H. Puentes, Bill Rastetter, and the board sealed it for me, and I knew this was a mission I wanted to be part of.

#9 To date, SD2 has supported 147 Fellows, 57 Scholars, and 124 Interns, with five students moving into full-time roles. Altogether, SD2 has invested more than $2 million in scholarships, opening doors for students to pursue their degrees and futures in STEM.

#10 Invest in future STEM leaders today. Whether you want to set up a recurring donation or make a one-time gift, you can easily donate directly to SD2.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
