“Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
– Christian Nestell Bovee

The San Diego Police Foundation proudly supports America’s finest police department by cultivating positive community engagement and helping fund vital equipment and specialized training that ensures peace and safety for all. The goal of the Police Foundation is simple, yet essential: to create a safer San Diego. That means safety for all who live, work, and play in San Diego. Funded by community contributions since its founding in 1998, the Police Foundation funds crucial equipment, specialized training, and outreach programs vital to creating safer communities. Barbara B. Savaglio is the Women in Blue Executive Cabinet Chair & Executive Committee Board Member.

#6 Despite being a fierce competitor in my profession and sports, I am a big softie. I cry during Hallmark commercials.

#7 Bucket list: Playing golf in Ireland.

#8 Giving to my community has helped me to grow, learn, and better understand my place on earth.

#9 I became involved with San Diego Police Foundation when I realized the importance of women in the Police Department (i.e., former Chief Shelly Zimmerman and Assistant Chief Sandra Albrektsen). Once I became involved with the Police Foundation, my connection deepened with Women in Blue, a luncheon that honors female members of the San Diego Police Department. These women inspire me and make me want to do more to help others. I have served as the Executive Cabinet Chair for this event for several years and am honored to serve in this role.

#10 The Women in Blue initiative provides funding for training, mentoring, collaboration, and networking opportunities for rising female leaders in law enforcement. Proceeds from the Women in Blue luncheon propel the mission of the San Diego Police Foundation, which includes support for SDPD’s peer mentoring program, the Women’s Leadership Conference, efforts to recruit more females to the ranks of SDPD, as well as scholarships to empower rising female officers and inspire the next generation of Women in Blue.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
