The Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter officially launched its 2026 Brilliance Gala with a moving kickoff reception that set the tone for an evening rooted in hope, connection, and impact. Centered on this year’s theme, Music Meets Memory, the gathering highlighted the extraordinary role music can play in reaching individuals living with dementia, often when words and recognition feel out of reach.

Community leader and  Radio Hall of Famer, Tommy Sablan shared a powerful personal story about his mother, Rosa, who suffered from dementia. She was no longer able to speak or walk and rarely showed outward engagement. But when a familiar song began to play, everything changed. She stood up. She became animated and joyful. In that moment, music unlocked connection and recognition. An experience that left the room visibly moved and reminded attendees of music’s unique ability to reach parts of the brain that remain resilient, even as memory declines.

Equally impactful was the story shared by former Hope Award recipient, Karen Wilder, longtime Alzheimer’s champion and caregiver to her late husband, the beloved actor Gene Wilder. Karen reflected on the profound role music played throughout Gene’s life and during his journey with dementia – as a source of comfort, identity, and expression. She also hinted at a special announcement related to Gene and music that will be revealed at the gala, adding anticipation to an already meaningful evening.

Building on this momentum, the Alzheimer’s Association is pleased to welcome former Hope Award recipient, Emeritus Board Member, David Crean as the 2026 Brilliance Gala Co-Chair. David brings a strong commitment to community leadership and a shared sense of urgency to advance dementia care, support, and research – helping guide the vision and impact of this year’s gala.

The 2026 Brilliance Gala will take place on May 1, 2026, at the Seabird Resort, bringing together community leaders, healthcare innovators, and philanthropists to support critical dementia care, support services, and research.

This year’s honorees reflect the power of collective impact. Gregory Sahagian, CEO of the Neurology Center, will be recognized as the Research Champion Award recipient for advancing dementia research and treatment. iHeartMedia will receive the Visionary Award for amplifying awareness and connection through the universal language of music.

Join on May 1, 2026, for an evening where purpose meets possibility. For more information or to get involved, visit brilliancegala.givesmart.com.
