The holidays in San Diego bring bright lights, festive gatherings, and the traditions we look forward to all year long. But for thousands of families struggling to make ends meet, the season can be less about joy and more about hardship. That is where The Salvation Army steps in – and this year, the organization is putting out a call louder than ever: We need volunteers.
Each November and December, The Salvation Army San Diego undertakes one of the largest outreach efforts in the county distributing toys, food, clothing, and vital support to families who might otherwise go without. Behind every gift box, every plate of food, and every ringing bell outside a store is a volunteer who chose to make someone else’s holiday brighter.
Take Maria, a San Diego retiree who has spent the past five Christmases volunteering at her local Salvation Army. “I thought I would just do it once,” she says. “But the joy a parent feels when they pick out a toy for their child or when a family gets their Christmas meal – it fills me with more holiday spirit than anything else.”
Perhaps the most recognizable way to serve is as a Red Kettle Bell Ringer. Those familiar bells outside grocery stores and shopping centers are not just a tradition – they are a lifeline. Funds raised through kettles support food pantries, shelters, and housing for families in need. Signing up is simple online and individuals, families, or even coworkers can volunteer for a two-hour shift.
But bell ringing is just the beginning. Across San Diego County, Salvation Army community centers rely on volunteers to sort toys for Angel Tree, pack food boxes and serve meals. These centers are the beating heart of The Salvation Army’s mission – and during the holidays, they are buzzing with activity.
The need continues to grow. Last year, The Salvation Army San Diego provided holiday assistance to thousands of families, and this year, rising costs mean even more will need help. Volunteers make it possible to turn generosity into action.
