Southwest Airlines is dedicated to championing causes that matter most to the cities we serve, which is why we are so proud to support the USS Midway Museum. Southwest Airlines strives to be a globally trusted citizen by fostering authentic relationships that empower communities to thrive. Midway and Southwest Airlines are completely aligned in our objective for guest experience, education, community outreach and commitment to service. Midway has been an incredible partner for the past 10 years. We congratulate them on the big anniversary and look forward to the next 20 years of community impact.

USS Midway Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024, the USS Midway Museum has not only become the most popular, but also the most visited naval ship museum in the world. Proudly known as America’s Living Symbol of Freedom, Midway has also become a treasured icon for the city of San Diego.

Midway remains dedicated to providing engaging, inspiring and educational experiences. A visit to Midway not only allows guests to enjoy more than 80 years of naval aviation history, but also to discover what it is like to be a naval aviator. “Midway offers an unmatched guest experience because of our innovative exhibits, engaging educational programs and dedicated volunteers,” said Terry Kraft, Midway’s president and CEO. “We thank the community and visitors from around the world who have helped make the last two decades possible.”

With Midway’s success, it was no surprise that the museum welcomed its’ 20 millionth visitor on its 20th anniversary. Ashely Walters was in the right place at the right time to be the center of this milestone celebration. “I am not sure I can accurately describe how shocked I was to be the 20 millionth visitor,” remarked Ashley, a San Diego native. “It was a true honor and something I will never forget. The Midway transports you through time and gives you a true appreciation for our military service men and women, past and present.”

Midway’s education and youth programs continue to touch the lives of thousands of students every year through its onboard field trip program, overnight sleepover program, and virtual distance-learning program. The Midway Institute for Teachers collaborates with universities around the country to create an unparalleled professional development experience for high school teachers.

“By participating in Midway’s educational programs, students gain a deeper understanding of key academic concepts and develop valuable life skills like critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork,” added Tina Chin, Midway’s director of education. “Once on board Midway, students are transported into a living classroom. Through hands-on learning and real-world exploration, our programs empower students to become informed, engaged citizens and lifelong learners.”

As Midway begins its next exciting chapter, the museum has its vision firmly pointed into the future. Not only are new and technologically advanced exhibits enhancing the onboard guest experience, but Midway is also working to again contribute to the betterment of San Diego community. Partnering with the Port of San Diego, Midway is developing Freedom Park at Navy Pier. As the largest veterans park on the West Coast, it will celebrate the region’s rich military history and tell the story of everyday heroes who served our country and preserved our freedoms. It will provide local San Diegans and out-of-town visitors a unique experience on the waterfront, with numerous public amenities, including a nature garden, memorials and monuments, seating and shading, and interpretive signage.

“After many years, Freedom Park at Navy Pier is moving from concept to reality,” Laura White, president of the USS Midway Foundation who is overseeing the fundraising effort for the park’s construction shared with GB Magazine. “The park will be a tribute to the men and women who have worn the uniform of our nation. It will be a unique and enduring way to honor those who have served, as well as cherish freedom.”

Midway’s efforts and accomplishments, both in the past and moving forward, would not be possible without the continued support of dedicated partners like Southwest Airlines.
