USD Founders Gala

The year 2024 marks a diamond-sized milestone in the University of San Diego’s history. Founded in 1949, this cherished Catholic institution is celebrating its 75th anniversary. As the capstone of this moment in time, the university is hosting its signature fundraising event, Shine Bright on the Diamond: 75th Anniversary Founders Gala, presented by US Bank, on Saturday, November 16, at “America’s #1 Ballpark,” Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres. This event continues USD’s strong community partnership with the Padres organization.

The Founders Gala name pays homage to Founders Day, the Feast of St. Didacus, namesake of the city of San Diego. Members of the community will come together in the spirit of USD’s mission and vision initiated by co-founders Bishop Charles Frances Buddy and Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill, RSCJ.

Founders Gala Honorary Chair and USD Board of Trustees Chair Emerita Darlene Marcos Shiley will be among more than 700 of the region’s most prominent corporate, philanthropic and community leaders, along with university trustees, administrators, alumni and friends present.

The inaugural gala in 2009 introduced the Founders Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides vital support for undergraduate, graduate and law students. The six previous galas raised a total of $6 million in net proceeds for student scholarships, including a record $2.3 million net in 2021.
“Founders Gala and the Founders Endowed Scholarship Fund provide a special opportunity to raise funds for student scholarship support,” Coreen Petti, associate vice president of University Events and Strategic Partnerships and Founders Gala Event Chair shared with GB Magazine. “This enables USD to attract and retain the best and brightest students, to receive a holistic, rigorous education that will help them become ethical and compassionate leaders who are inspired to create lasting social change.”

Attendees will have an unforgettable evening on the field. A cocktail reception, unique silent and live auctions, an exquisite dining experience, live music and dancing await. USD President James T. Harris III, D.Ed, and other special presenters will showcase how USD is lighting the way forward into its next 75 years.

“The Founders Gala has such a positive spirit in it,” Harris says. “It is always a wonderful event, but particularly special as we celebrate the university’s 75th anniversary and chart a course for the future.”
