The Salvation Army’s National Donut Day: A Tribute to Veterans

Share

For over a century, The Salvation Army has been providing more than just warm meals – it has been serving up one of America’s favorite treats: the donut. National Donut Day, held annually on the first Friday in June, is more than just a celebration of this beloved pastry. It is a tribute to the brave Salvation Army “Donut Lassies” of World War I paired with a fun family-friendly event supporting vital programs for veterans in need.

National Donut Day traces back to 1917, when Evangeline Booth, daughter of Salvation Army founder William Booth, sent volunteers to the frontlines of World War I in France. These women, known as “Donut Lassies,” provided soldiers with a taste of home – hot coffee, warm meals, and fresh, handmade donuts. Their efforts lifted spirits and introduced American troops to a pastry that was virtually unknown in the U.S. at the time.

When soldiers returned home, they longed for the donuts they had enjoyed overseas, sparking America’s love affair with the treat. In 1938, The Salvation Army established National Donut Day as both a fundraiser and a way to honor the legacy of the Donut Lassies. Since then, The Salvation Army has continued to celebrate this historic day each year while using it as an opportunity to support veterans and those in need.

Keeping the memory of the Donut Lassies alive is more than just honoring history – it is about inspiring future generations to serve with the same heart and dedication,” said Major Amy Reardon, Divisional Secretary for The Salvation Army San Diego shared with GB Magazine.

The Salvation Army, in partnership with BakeMark, is proud to announce the 2nd annual Donut Festival aboard the historic USS Midway Museum, celebrating National Donut Day. BakeMark sponsors National Donut Day, showcasing some of the finest donut shops in San Diego County.

Taking place on Friday, June 6, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with ship access starting at 11 AM, the festival is FREE for everyone. A special tribute will honor military veterans for their service.

A highlight of the event is an exciting competition among participating donut shops, each presenting their unique interpretation of an 80th anniversary Midway-themed donut, commemorating 80 years since the Naval aircraft carrier was built. Local celebrity judges will select the Best in Show among these themed creations. Attendees can enjoy a variety of delicious donuts while exploring the rich history of The Midway.

“Our goal is to bring the community together in celebration of National Donut Day while raising awareness about military veterans struggling in San Diego County,” added Major Reardon. “Through the generosity of BakeMark, The Midway, and community support, we aim to make a meaningful impact.”

The festival promises a fun-filled day with a live band, DJ, activities, and plenty of FREE donuts. Admission is FREE, with donations encouraged to support The Salvation Army’s efforts to combat veteran hunger.
