The Salvation Army Why I Give Back

In a region known for its sunshine, innovation, and generosity, members of the Metro Advisory Board of The Salvation Army San Diego are proving that giving back is more than an act, it is a calling. For these civic and business leaders, philanthropy is not just about writing a check; it is about investing time, talent, and heart into transforming lives across San Diego County.

The statement “Why I give back” is one that resonates deeply with each board member. For many, the answer begins with a personal connection to the mission of The Salvation Army: meeting human needs without discrimination. Whether supporting families facing homelessness, providing meals to those experiencing food insecurity, or helping individuals rebuild after crisis, the impact is both immediate and lasting.

For current Metro Advisory Board Chair Jason Belice, the decision to give back is rooted in both gratitude and responsibility. “I faithfully support The Salvation Army because I know that the highest percentage of my donations are used to do the most good for the people in need in San Diego County,” he shared with GB Magazine. “I have been blessed in my life and career and serving alongside The Salvation Army allows me to be part of something bigger than myself – something that truly changes lives.” Belice emphasizes that what sets The Salvation Army apart is its ability to meet people where they are, offering not just resources, but hope. “When you see firsthand the impact of families finding stability, individuals regaining dignity – it reinforces why this work matters.”

That sentiment is echoed by Karin Donaldson, a former Chair of the Metro Advisory Board, who has long been a champion of community service. For Donaldson, giving back is about connection. “It is easy to feel disconnected in a busy world, but when you engage with The Salvation Army, you see the real needs in our community and the real difference you can make,” she added. “It is not just about charity; it is about building relationships and creating pathways for people to thrive.”

Metro Advisory Board members come from diverse professional backgrounds, but they share a common belief: that meaningful change requires collective action. Through fundraising, advocacy, and hands-on service, they help amplify The Salvation Army’s mission throughout San Diego. Their leadership ensures that critical programs from shelter and rehabilitation services to youth development and holiday assistance continue to reach those who need them most.

Importantly, giving back also inspires others to do the same. “Philanthropy is contagious,” Belice notes. “When people see their peers stepping up, it creates momentum. It reminds us that we are all part of this community, and we all have something to contribute.” Donaldson agrees, adding that the rewards of giving far outweigh the investment. “You receive so much more than you give,” she says. “There is a deep sense of purpose that comes from knowing you have helped change someone’s story.”

At its core, the Metro Advisory Board embodies a simple but powerful idea that when individuals come together with compassion and commitment, real transformation happens. Their collective efforts are a testament to what is possible when generosity meets action.

In San Diego, giving back is not just something you do, it is who you are. And through The Salvation Army, these leaders are helping to ensure that hope, help, and opportunity remain within reach for all.
